FDI organizes Data Cleanup Day for the second year running

Digital Cleanup Day, or World Digital Cleanup Day, is an annual global action created in 2019. Its aim is to raise awareness of the environmental impact of digital technology. To this end, Digital Cleanup Day (or Data Cleanup Day at FDI) proposes one day a year to eliminate superfluous digital data and offer a second life to digital equipment.

Digital Cleanup Day – or Data Cleanup Day at FDI – is organized for the second year running at FDI. This is the second edition of the event, which aims to rationalize server storage and reduce FDI’s ecological footprint.

Combating the environmental footprint of digital technology at FDI

The impact of digital technology on the environment is often underestimated or misunderstood. Digital is :

0 % of electricity generated worldwide
0 % of primary energy consumed by humanity
0 % of available water
0 % of global greenhouse gases

At FDI, the aim of Data Cleanup Day is fourfold:

1 – Sensibiliser

FDI raises employee awareness to reduce polluting digital habits

FDI is raising awareness among its employees to limit bad practices considered to be polluting. Although invisible or intangible, these storage and archiving habits have a significant environmental impact.

By raising awareness of these often overlooked aspects, FDI aims to promote more sustainable habits within the company.

EMPLOYEE TASKS FOR FDI’S DATA CLEANUP DAY

During this FDI initiative, employees were given the task of sorting and eliminating superfluous data. It was a day dedicated to clarity, efficiency and environmental awareness. The objectives of the participants were to :

  • Sort and delete superfluous data and files from FDI servers,
  • Sort their e-mails and delete unnecessary attachments,
  • Delete superfluous data from OneDrive,
  • Eliminate superfluous files exchanged on Teams.

This challenge took place in teams, transforming the task into a friendly and positive challenge, always in a friendly and convivial atmosphere.

CONCLUSIVE RESULTS FOR FDI THANKS TO DATA CLEANUP DAY

This awareness-raising day enabled FDI employees to free up over 1,400 GB of space on FDI servers.

  • 28% of storage was freed up on FDI servers,
  • 11% of storage was freed up on Outlook mailboxes.

These very positive figures are the equivalent of :

  • 805 low-energy light bulbs switched on for 1 year,
  • 27,500 kg of CO2, or 27 tons.

FDI’s commitments following Data Cleanup Day

For two years now, FDI has been fully committed to the event. FDI has decided to make this commitment permanent by renewing Data Cleanup Day every year.

FDI employees are determined to keep up momentum by automatically sorting, renaming and deleting files in their respective folders throughout the year. This proactive approach not only minimizes effort required on D-day, but also continually preserves the environment.

By integrating these data and storage management practices over a long-term period, FDI is taking a sustainable approach while encouraging ongoing responsibility towards the planet.
