What is the OSDP protocol?

OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) is a standard and open protocol for communication between readers and access control units (ACUs).

Développé par la SIA (Security Industry Association), le protocole OSDP a pour objectif d’améliorer l’interopérabilité des systèmes de contrôle d’accès et produits de sécurité. The OSDP is an international standard approved by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in 2020.

The OSDP protocol aims to make interoperable the access control systems that incorporate it. More specifically, the objective of the OSDP is to be able to combine several access control products or systems, regardless of their manufacturer or brand, while guaranteeing and maintaining a high security standard.

What are the advantages of the OSDP?

Enhanced security level

OSDP supports AES-128 bit encryption, a block cipher algorithm. It ensures optimum confidentiality of sensitive information, and safeguards security data. The OSDP has been designed to refuse all connections from unauthorized readers. This feature provides better protection against attacks such as skimming, eavesdropping and relay attacks.

Simplified communication

Thanks to its RS485 interface and bi-directional communication, the OSDP enables simplified communication between different electronic access control systems. The OSDP uses the RS485 protocol to transmit data from the reader to the access controller. OSDP enables diagnostics, drive status monitoring, malfunction detection and parameter adjustment without the need for physical intervention.

Interoperability assured

The use of the OSDP norm allows communication between devices and solutions from different manufacturers. This protocol is compatible with a wide range of devices, from complex systems to diverse environments. OSDP is interoperable and easily adaptable. In addition, OSDP simplifies the software update process and ensures that security systems are up to date with essential security features and patches.

AES-128 encryption

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit key length. 128-bit AES is a symmetrical, block-structured encryption algorithm. This algorithm is widely used to secure data because of its efficiency.

RS485 protocol

Standard defining the electrical characteristics of a serial digital interface. It enables multipoint communication over long distances.

Skimming

A form of fraud in which devices are installed to copy data from badge readers. This technique is used by fraudsters to retrieve confidential information during the badge/reader dialogue.

Relay attack

Computer attack used to intercept communications. The attacker relays messages between two parties, making them believe they are communicating directly with each other.

Why did FDI choose to integrate the OSDP protocol into its readers?

OSDP is an open, secure protocol designed to replace the old Wiegand protocol. As part of the internationalisation of its activity, FDI must answer the standards in force in order to be able to offer its products to its export customers while guaranteeing an optimal level of security.

This technological upgrade makes FDI a major player in the access control sector, offering new solutions to meet the evolving needs of its customers in France and abroad. As a result, the FDI P40, P80 and PK80 range of readers now integrates the OSDP protocol to meet the security needs of all its customers, particularly internationally.
